Orthodontic Treatment

What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics aims to move the position of the teeth so that they are nicely straight in your dental arch to improve the function and appearance of the teeth. Your teeth will be easier to clean and the force distribution will be more balanced.
Why should I have orthodontic treatment?
Many people have too little space in their jaws, resulting in crooked teeth. It can also happen that there is too much space in the jaw and the teeth are growing in the wrong place in the dental arch. Orthodontic treatment will align and better position the teeth in the dental arch. This can improve the appearance of the teeth and the way they bite. They are also easier to clean.
From what age can orthodontic treatment be performed?
It is best to go to the dentist for orthodontics from childhood, but adults can certainly get orthodontic treatment as well. Age is less important than having the right number of teeth. In children, it may be necessary to wait for adequate tooth eruption before starting treatment.
Who is orthodontics done by?
Your dentist can perform orthodontic treatment. They can also refer you to a specialist with additional qualifications. You can find a specialist in orthodontics, also called a dentist, in the practice or hospital.
Should I have my teeth extracted to make room?
You may not have enough space for all your permanent teeth. If so, you may need to pull out some permanent teeth to make room. Our dental team will tell you if this is the case. Sometimes space can be made with other types of treatment.
What is a removable bracket?
A removable brace uses gentle pressure to change the position of your teeth. You can remove the holder from the mouth to clean it. Moving braces are also used to maintain the current position of the teeth or to prevent teeth grinding at night.
What is a fixed bracket?
Fixed braces cannot be removed from the mouth. Often times, teeth need to be guided more precisely than removable braces. An example of a fixed brace is a brace. We glue the brackets to your teeth so you can’t remove the brackets. A flexible wire connects all the brackets and changes the position of your teeth.
What is a functional appliance?
With the help of a functional braces, it is sometimes possible to change the way your jaws grow. This works by using the strength of your jaw muscles and can help with certain dental problems.
What is an outboard bracket?
We attach rings around your molars with external braces. At night, you wear a cap that prevents your upper jaw from growing. You usually only need to wear braces in the evening or at night.
What are invisible braces?
These are hard, clear plastic plates (molds) used to straighten teeth. You wear each set for two weeks before buying a new one. They are almost invisible, as they are made of clear plastic. For best results, you should wear a plate for 22 to 23 hours a day. It is important that you have removed all your adult teeth before having this treatment.
What is elastic?
Sometimes delicate rubber bands are attached to the braces to help the teeth move. Your orthodontist will tell you if you need a tire.
How long should I wear braces?
The length of treatment depends on how severe the problem is. It can range from a few months to two and a half years. Most people can be cured within one to two years.
What happens when my teeth are in the right position?
When the treatment is finished, the teeth should be left in place for a while. We call this the ‘holding time’. Devices that hold teeth in place are called retainers. Depending on the original problem, the holders can be removed or installed.
Do braces hurt?
All devices may seem strange at first and cause discomfort. If the problem does not go away, the orthodontist can make adjustments to correct the problem. Teeth often become a little sensitive soon after braces are in place, but this passes quickly.
How successful is orthodontics?
Success depends on both the dentist’s skills in orthodontics and the enthusiasm and helpfulness of the patient (parents if the patient is a child). It is important to follow all the instructions of the dentist and make an appointment for orthodontics. The success of treatment also depends on the patient’s determination. It is very important for the child to support the treatment for orthodontics in children.
Can Orthodontics Damage My Teeth?
Your teeth may be damaged if you do not take good care of them during treatment. Braces themselves do not cause any damage, but poor cleaning and too much sugary food and drink can cause permanent damage to your teeth. Brackets and wires can trap food and cause more plaque to form than normal. That’s why it’s so important to thoroughly clean your teeth and braces.
Is orthodontics permanent?
Even after orthodontic work, it is normal to have minor tooth movements throughout life. Therefore, we cannot promise permanent results. However, it is rare for teeth to change enough to require new treatment.
How should I take care of my braces and teeth?
It is important to have your teeth checked by your dentist while wearing braces. You should also take extra care of your teeth and mouth:
Carefully clean every day, even between teeth that you can’t easily reach. Brackets are fragile and therefore careful cleaning is essential. This will prevent the bracket from breaking. Your dental team will show you the specific techniques you can use depending on the braces you wear.
Reduce the amount of sugary and carbonated foods and drinks. Sticky and hard foods can also damage your braces.
Brush your teeth before going to bed and at least once a day. Use mouthwash if needed. Your dental team may recommend a stronger fluoride toothpaste or fluoride gel or mouthwash that you can use
