BALDNESS REMEDIES
There are a few medications on the market that promise to treat baldness, but few are really effective.
WHAT IS BALDNESS
Androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, is the main cause of hair loss in men. This type of hair loss occurs due to a genetic change in male hormone receptors on the scalp. In the process of baldness evolution, there is a gradual reduction in the diameter and pigmentation of the follicles, a process known as miniaturization.
ESSENTIAL REMEDIES FOR BALDNESS
Main remedies for baldness:
Finasteride (oral tablet): The mechanism of action is the inhibition of the 5 alpha reductase enzyme. This enzyme has the function of converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The second is the main villain in hair loss. Although results are obtained in all age groups, it is young patients who benefit the most. Women of childbearing potential cannot take finasteride. Patients taking finasteride cannot donate blood. The most feared side effects are decreased libido and decreased potency. Fortunately, these effects are rare.
Finasteride lotion – topical medicine: Recent research has shown that topical finasteride is also effective in treating male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil: It was the first drug used in the treatment of male pattern baldness . It was developed in the 70’s and was originally used to treat systemic arterial hypertension. The main side effects are allergies and facial hypertrichosis (the appearance of facial hair).
Dutasteride: Like Finasteride, it is also a medicine for baldness in pill form. It acts the same way by decreasing the DHT concentration. Available in Mexico and South Korea only.
Latanaprost: It is a commonly used drug to treat glaucoma, a disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure. They observed an increase in eyelashes and eyebrows in these patients.
Ketoconazole: It is used in the form of shampoo and its effect on baldness is to reduce the population of malassessia sp fungi , which is mainly responsible for seborrheic dermatitis , and also reduces the production of male hormone in the scalp.
